The South African National Standard (SANS) specifications “belong to the Department of Trade Industry and Competition (the DTIC). The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) is overseen by the DTIC and is governed by the Standards Act, No. 8 of 2008, which formally split the regulatory functions and powers from the SABS. The SABS Standards Division is mandated to develop, promote and maintain South African National Standards (SANS). Promote quality in connection with commodities, products and services. SABS Commercial SOC Ltd (State-owned-company) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the SABS, funded through revenue derived by the selling of conformity assessment and standardisation services.
SABS is a brand. The SANS specifications does not belong to the SABS, but they do sell it!
